About Isabelle Stolar

Drawing as a child.

I was one of those children who enjoy spending time doodling. As far as I remember, drawing was the most obvious way to express myself and to connect various dimensions of children experiences.

When I was about 6 years old, I remember drawing lots of cows and characters without hands. Psychologists would probably have said that it did not augur well in term of bonding potential. Fortunately, within the world of images, with time, hands happen to grow here and there.

Recently I started to draw cows again. I showed images to my two year old daughter and she liked them, she said “para” (cow in Hebrew). Since we are currently living in Israel, my daughter speaks Hebrew, a language which I laboriously learn while she is mastering it. She can pronounce sounds such as « KH », « RR » (impossible for French speaking people), I am impressed by my two years old Hebrew teacher!!!

Working with children and teenagers...

During the first part of my professional life I rather worked with damaged and repaired childhood. I was not focused on drawing although I enjoyed paying a particular attention to the creative side of the children and families I worked with.

After social work studies, I worked, for more than 10 years in the field of child education and child protection. In parallel, I studied Anthropology (master degree - Lyon /France and Montreal/Canada).

Looking for opening my experience in helping relation to an intentional field and practice, I Recently went back to university (back to Lyon II University!) for a year. I received a master degree in Humanity and Human Sciences with a focus on humanitarian work.

For the closure if this master, I had the opportunity to develop and manage an internet site (www.common-paradise.net/imaginaire/) for a local association which develops tools for peace education. My mission was to display on the internet, the educational tools and the theoretical approach of this association. This work emphasized the importance of children’s mental images that surfaced during a creative activity.

...Toward a little "images factory".

On the occasion of this work placement, I enjoyed thinking about the imaginary process as a way of making connections between images which open toward action and creation of other images.

Reading and writing about «mental images» led me to want to create images myself. Not only to think about the creative process of images but rather to sit down, grab colours, papers, open photoshop and actually start making images. I realised it was what I have always wanted to do it without putting it into words and into action.

At first, I drew using acrylics only (first cows on the blog). I'm now slowly coming across the world of "Photoshop", and I’m having great fun using and gradually discovering this immeasurable medium... I am now planning to be toying with "illustrator" very soon.

I started by hanging birds and cows on the wall of my daughter's bedroom. Then, new fellows such as soft bunnies, sheepish teddies, fidgeting lions and later on thoughtless fairies, joined up... After a while this eclectic population asked for some more open space...
Here is their new house with a little sign overhanging the doorstep:« les images d'Isa ».you are welcome to pay a visit...
